The courage to be in the “in-between”

We often hear stories about beginnings and endings: the turning points, the breakthroughs, the moments when something finally makes sense. But what we rarely hear about is the “in-between”, that uncertain, messy space where we’re still finding our footing, where things are shifting but haven’t yet settled.

The in-between can feel uncomfortable. It’s the space of not knowing, of waiting, of trying, of falling, and getting back up. It’s when we question ourselves, when progress feels invisible, and when the future feels foggy. But this is also where growth happens.

Just like how a seed takes time in the dark soil before it breaks through the surface, or how a caterpillar needs time in its cocoon before transforming into a butterfly, we too need time in our own quiet, unseen seasons. We need room to pause and let the process unfold without rushing toward an outcome.

All of us, at different points, find ourselves in the in-betweens. Maybe the invitation isn’t to hurry through it, but to make space for ourselves within it, especially if we want to live with awareness, understanding, growth, and depth.

Therapy can also be a space that allows for this. Not just for immediate fixes or neat solutions (though those are certainly important), but as a space to sit together in uncertainty, gentle exploration, noticing, experimenting, and finding ways forward. Both therapist and client learn to stay present with what is still forming, to allow the in-between to be what it is, a tender, necessary part of being human, and to trust that meaning can emerge from the not knowing.
