How to prepare your child for their assessment

Preparing your child for an assessment can help ease any anxiety they may feel and ensure a smooth process. Here are some tips to help you and your child get ready for their assessment:

1. Explain the process: Talk to your child about what to expect during the assessment. Use simple, reassuring language to explain that the assessment is a way to understand how they learn and think, and to find out the best ways to support them. Emphasise that there are no right or wrong answers.

2. Encourage a positive mindset: Frame the assessment as an opportunity for your child to showcase their strengths and interests. Let them know that the goal is to understand how they learn best and to find ways to help them succeed.

3. Avoid test practice: There’s no need to pre-read or practice test questions. We aim to get an accurate picture of your child’s natural abilities and challenges. Practicing test questions can create unnecessary stress and may not provide an accurate representation of your child’s typical performance.

4. Comfort items: Allow your child to bring a favourite toy, blanket, or other comfort item to the assessment. Familiar objects can help them feel more at ease in a new environment.

5. Routine and rest: Ensure your child gets a good night’s sleep and has a healthy breakfast before the assessment. A well-rested and nourished body can help them focus and perform at their best.

6. Open communication: Encourage your child to ask questions and express any concerns they might have about the assessment. Open communication can help them feel more secure and understood.

By following these steps, you can help your child feel more comfortable and prepared for their assessment. Our goal is to create a positive and empowering experience that accurately reflects your child’s unique strengths and needs.
